Description
The Non-Binary Recognition Project (NBRP) is the only legal organization in the United States addressing the right of non-binary adults to gender-self-identify on legal documents.
Currently legal documents base identity on sex assigned at birth, or a later transition, without the possibility the individual may identify as neither male nor female, or both male and female. We propose an acknowledgment that in the human experience there exist a spectrum of potential gender/sex.
The goal of this project is to allow non-binary adults to self-identify as something other than male or female on their driver’s license, passport, and other government issued identification.
The project will address these issues through targeted legislative initiatives and collaboration with existing organizations and programs. The project will be implemented by:
• Proposing changes to the California Code to allow for a non-binary gender on drivers licenses
• Developing partnerships with LGBTIQ organizations in the US and worldwide
• Reaching out to intersex and genderqueer communities to assess the needs of non-binary people
• Identifying non-binary adults who are experiencing discrimination in order to begin impact litigation "
