"O'Porto's hidden symbology...
If you're visiting O'Porto, the first thing you'll notice is how beautiful the city is, the architecture, green areas and the views over the Douro river are stunning. If you walk through the city and pay attention to the façades of the buildings you will notice strange mythological creatures. Like on this picture, a depiction of the Green Man, carved on a building's façade in Rua Sá da Bandeira street. The Green Man motif has many variations. Found in many cultures from many ages around the world, the Green Man is often related to natural vegetative deities. It is primarily interpreted as a symbol of rebirth, representing the cycle of growth each spring.
O'Porto has a very rich pagan past, the summer, spring and winter solstices are Celebrated across the city. So, do not be surprise to see pagan references on Oporto's architecture. Of course, to the church this was an inconvenient and pagan celebrations were forbidden across the city. But the people of O'Porto would not stand for this and carried on celebrating pagan festivals. What did the church do then? The only solution was to include pagan celebrations on the Christian calendar, like the day of S, João "O Verde", (St. John, "The Green"), which is celebrated on the Summer Solstice. O'Porto goes mad during St. Johns, and people walk around the city hitting each other with garlic flowers for good luck. Traces of an ancient pagan tradition. St Johns bonfires were also a common tradition, but were soon forbidden by the Church. Nowadays plastic hammers are a common sight,a modern adaptation of the garlic flower tradition.
Well, if you visit O'Porto, you will be surprised... And remember, look for every detail and soon you may be able to unlock the city secrets... smile emoticon"
